Business-as-usual is leading us to our deaths. We've tried asking nicely, but our leaders haven't listened. Now we must rise up and demand real climate action.
Join Extinction Rebellion DC and the #ShutdownDC Coalition on December 6 as we take to the streets around the UN World Bank Headquarters in DC. We will create massive gridlock during morning rush hour and bring business-as-usual to a standstill, making the consequences of inaction real for those in power.
The UN's IPCC Report warns that we must make radical changes to our society at emergency speeds to avoid catastrophic impacts from the climate crisis. Yet the UN's financial institutions, the World Bank and IMF, continue to finance fossil fuel extraction.
This hypocrisy is unacceptable. We demand that the World Bank and the IMF listen to the science and immediately halt all direct and indirect financing of fossil fuel infrastructure. To fail to do so is to doom us all.
While this disruption is going on, global leaders will be meeting at the COP25 UN Climate Conference in Madrid to discuss international climate pledges. We must demonstrate to them that the people of this planet are fed up with empty promises and half measures.
We take this action in solidarity with our Extinction Rebellion comrades in Europe, who will be targeting the COP25 Conference with nonviolent direct action.
After the morning rush hour, we will be joining up with Fire Drill Fridays to support their rally and civil disobedience in the afternoon:
We will take an hour at the park (10-11am) to rest and eat brunch before the Fire Drill Friday Rally begins.
XRDC will be offering a roadblock training to prepare for this action:
It is now or never - we must withdraw our consent to be governed by a world order that values impossible eternal growth over human lives. We must rise up peacefully to reclaim our future from those would destroy it. We must rebel!
